TMC’s New Optical Top Solves Long-Standing Vacuum Compatibility Problem

PEABODY, Massachusetts, – Technical Manufacturing Corporation's new vacuum-compatible optical top combines TMC’s inherently clean CleanTop® with several new proprietary design features, special cleaning of process materials, and a vacuum pump-down procedure that keeps out-gassing to a minimum, the result of which was to achieve a level of vacuum compatibility that was previously unattainable. The top features all-stainless steel construction, including the honeycomb core with its vacuum-compatible geometry.

Historically, it has been difficult if not impossible to adapt steel honeycomb optical tops to meet the rigorous requirements of vacuum chamber applications,” said Steve Ryan, TMC vice president of marketing. “Engineers have sacrificed the rigidity, flatness, damping and convenience of an optical top for a machined structure of aluminum and stainless steel. Our new design solves this problem.”

Available in a wide range of sizes and shapes, TMC’s 730 Series vacuum-compatible optical top was developed with the assistance of scientists and engineers at the University of Texas’ Petawatt Laser Project and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

TMC designs and manufactures precision vibration isolation systems for sensitive research and manufacturing processes worldwide. The ISO 9001:2000-certified company’s products are the standard in the semiconductor manufacturing, life sciences, and photonics industries and are also used in academic, industrial, and military research projects.
